So I was
also asked to write a Article about Baron Samedi. Now this is kinda personally
to me because he is my Head Spirit. I have worked with him my whole life and my
relationship with him is so much stronger than any of the other Spirits or Loa I
serve. He is one of the most misunderstood of the Loa. My hope with this
article is to educate about the different sides of Baron Samedi, so you may
better understand him.
Baron Samedi is the Loa of
the Cemetery, Resurrection, Healing, and Sex. He is the one who digs the graves
of the dying. Without Baron Samedi digging that grave the Spirit isnt allowed
to pass over. He is known as a miracle worker and is capable of healing anyone
close to death if it isnt there time to cross over yet. The Baron can be called
on for all things sexual related. As Head of the Ghede Family he is quite
perverted. He is also the Head of the Cemetery along with his Wife Maman
Bridgette, they are the first man and woman buried in any cemetery. They are the Master and Mistress of the
Cemetery.
Baron Samedi is represented
by Saint Martin De Porres. He is also represented by skeleton with top hats,
sunglasses and cigars. Skulls and any other thing involving death and the
cemetery. His sacred colors are Purple, Black, and White. His offerings include
Rum, Vodka, Cigars, Hot spicy foods, pork dishes, chicken dishes, Creole
dishes, and hot peppers any of kind. He is served on Saturdays along with the rest
of the Ghede Spirits and his sacred Feast day is Fet Ghede on November 2-3. He
is a very poweful Loa and is served in both Haitian Vodou and NOLA Voodoo.
He is the Guardian of the
Ghede and the Ancestors. Anyone can become a Ghede Spirit when they pass but
not everyone does. They are often served while dancing the Banda. The Veve
varies between house to house and teacher to teacher so I will not include a
Veve here.
